Surveyor Creates Foundation to Protect Red River Rights

There’s been a big dispute going on in Texas for the last several years(at least) involving the Red River, three counties, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and a bunch of property owners. You may have heard of it, since it’s been all over the TV news and the internet lately. It’s often referred to as the “Red River Land Grab”. Heck evenTexas Land Commissioner George P. Bush is involved.

In a nutshell, the BLM has been resurveying the Red River inClay, Wichita, and Wilbarger counties and claiming they own a large amount of land that has been used by farmers and ranchers since the 1800’s or more. In BLM’s attempt to take ownership of the land, they have been met with resistance from the landowners via a lawsuit.

Now, a surveyor from Decatur has founded a new organization to assist landowners, counties and officials with the lawsuit against the BLM. Davey Edwards, Vice-President of Edwards Surveying and Mapping, created the Texas Public Survey Foundation (TPSF) based on the work his company provided to landowners involved with the dispute as well as U.S. Representative Mac Thornberry.

Before starting the TPSF, Edwards said he searched for organizations that provide similar services with no luck. He also talked to several colleagues, including Bill O’Hara, a former Director of Surveying for the Texas General Land Office (GLO), to see if the foundation would be helpful in providing research and other resources to help resolve land issues.
